Taroom, Wandoan

The countryside north of Taroom abounds in natural attractions, including spectacular sections of sandstone National Parks: Isla Gorge and Expedition National Park. Be sure to see the large Coolibah tree on which Ludwig Leichhardt carved his initials —it stands in the main street. The Dawson River creates many great fishing havens, one including the Glebe Weir where you can fish, camp and boat on this section of the River. Make sure to see Taroom’s ‘Steel Wings’ windmill — unique because its fan is contained and spins within the fully-pivoting fame. It’s one of only two known working examples in the world!

Wandoan began as Juandah Station in 1853 and changed its named to Wandoan in 1926. The ‘Wandoan Windmill’ mark’s the town entrance on the Highway; while the area is know primarily for its cattle and wheat, with the skyline dominated by wheat silos.
