HighwaysBlaze a trail in the steps of Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig Leichhardt, more commonly known as Ludwig Leichhardt or L.L., and travel the Leichhardt Highway a 678 km highway, from the vibrant border town of Goondiwindi in Queensland's Western Downs to the heart of the Capricorn Coast, Yeppoon. It's over 160 years since Leichhardt, armed with few provisions and plenty of determination crossed the Great Dividing Range, however his courageous journeys filled with excitement and discovery can be relived by today's traveller in modern day comforts along the well kept historic route. The Leichhardt Highway stretches north through quaint country towns, over rivers brimming with freshwater fish, by tranquil lagoons, through mining towns where opulence was once flaunted in grand architecture left for us to admire today, into the Beef Capital of Australia, Rockhampton, to conclude on the beautiful Capricorn Coast at Yeppoon, where the outback meets the sea. Magnificent wildflowers blooming in forests, historical villages, understanding our Aboriginal culture, entering the once 'world's greatest gold mine' or just sitting at a bar and meeting the locals always appreciative you've dropped by. So why not 'blaze a trail' as Ludwig did and start your motor running for a fantastic journey northbound following the steps of one of Australia's most energetic and devoted explorers. The Great Inland Way - a jewel in Queensland's crown of highways - takes you from the ochre coloured outback to the crystal clear waters of the Coral Sea. The 1,863 km route from the border village of Hebel to tropical Cairns has been attracting southern traveller’s preferring the quieter flat western roads leading north and those wishing a fascinating return from the tropics. Travel the Great Inland Way over the Great Dividing Range, past National Parks each diverse and unique, World Heritage listed rainforests exploding with beauty. You'll pass through towns, big and small, all welcoming you to their special spot in paradise. Visit communities where mining still runs in the blood, though be warned, travellers have been known to be lured by the array of sparkling gems and precious metals on offer taking up fossicking full time! The whole route is fully sealed and with plenty of choices for accommodation. Don't be in a hurry, there is too much to do and learn on this wonderful drive, plenty of locals to share a chat with and some interesting short drives radiating from the original route. It's a drive that will relax you as you escape the hustle and bustle, you see, there is no busy traffic along the Great Inland Way. The Warrego Highway, a 744 km fully sealed stretch of Highway leading you from the Sunshine States capital, Brisbane, through the fertile Lockyer Valley, up and over the Great Dividing Range, across the Darling Downs and onto the outback metropolis of Charleville. Along the way, you can see ancient trees from the dinosaur age, endangered mammals, unwind in the soothing waters from the sub artesian basin, delight in tales told over country bars, or just relax and enjoy the brilliant sunsets and starry nights, and this is to name just a few The Warrego Highway, one of the oldest highways in Queensland, a highway leading you to a new adventure each day. Gore Highway From the home of Gunsynd and Queensland’s Cotton Capital to Queensland’s Garden City, the Gore Highway is 210 km of the best country driving. Travelling the Gore highway will take you through the world famous Darling Downs from Goondiwindi to Toowoomba. It’s a drive that will save you time linking Australia’s southern states and all the tourism hotspots of South East Queensland. It’s the quickest link between the Newell Highway and Brisbane. |
